DETAILED ITINERARY
Day 1: Arrival and transfer to akagera national park
Upon arrival at Kigali international airport, you will be welcomed by your guide. After a short briefing, embark on a scenic drive east to Akagera national park, Rwanda’s only savannah park and home to the big five. On arrival, you will check into the lodge and enjoy relaxation with stunning views over the park.
Day 2: Morning game drive and boat cruise
In the morning you will head out to the national park for a morning game drive. While on the drive, you will look out for lions, elephants, leopards, hyenas, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras and antelopes among others. After the game drive, return to the lodge for lunch
In the afternoon, enjoy a relaxing boat cruise on lake Ihema where you will spot hippos, crocodiles and a variety of water birds. After the boat cruise, you will return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 3: Transfer to volcanoes national park
After breakfast, check out of the lodge and embark on the journey to volcanoes national park in northwest of Rwanda. Enjoy the scenic journey through the countryside with views of terraced hills and rural life. On arrival, you will check in the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 4: Gorilla trekking
After early morning breakfast, you will head to the park’s headquarters for a briefing. After the briefing, head into the forest in search of the majestic gorillas. The trek can take 1-6 hours depending on the location of the gorillas. Once they are located, you will spend an hour with them as you watch them play, feed, breastfeed and nurture their young ones. After the trekking, you will return to the lodge for a relaxation, dinner and overnight stay.
Day 5: Hike to Dian Fossey grave and visit Iby’iwacu cultural village
After breakfast, take a guided hike to Dian Fossey tomb and research centre at Karisoke. You will learn about her legacy in conserving mountain gorillas and enjoy the serene forest views. After the hike return to the lodge for a relaxation and lunch.
In the afternoon visit the iby’iwacu cultural village for an engaging experience with Rwanda’s traditional customs, dances and local crafts. After the trek, you will return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 6: Transfer back to Kigali and departure
After a relaxed breakfast, check out of the lodge and embark on the journey to Kigali. Depending on your flight schedule, you can enjoy a short city tour where you will visit the Kigali genocide memorial, kimironko market and local craft shops. After, you will be dropped at Kigali international airport for your flight back home.
