Attractions to see in Akagera National Park
Akagera national park is one of Rwanda’s greatest treasure and a sanctuary of savannah, lakes, wetlands and woodland which tells an amazing story of conservation and renewal. The park is located along Rwanda’s eastern border with Tanzania stretching over an are of 1,122 square kilometres. The park derives its name from akagera river which flows along the eastern boundary feeding a number of lakes found within the park such as lake Ihema as well as other small lakes.
Attractions in Akagera National Park
- The Big five
Akagera national park is a home to all Africa’s big five and these include; lions, elephants, buffalo, leopard and rhinoceros.
The lions were introduced within the park in 2015 after being wiped out and have since thrived.
The black rhinos were returned in 2017 and white rhinos were added in 2021
Large herds of buffalo and elephants are as well seen throughout the park
Leopards still roam the more in the wooded areas but mostly in the night. Thus, the big five animals make the national park look special.
Besides the big five, akagera national park has more wildlife species such as giraffes which were as well introduced in 1986 within the park. Other wildlife species include; impala, zebra, bushbuck, hyena, side stripped jackal, mongoose species, serval, oribi and many more. This is due to the domination of savannah vegetation which provides a suitable habitat for a wide range of wildlife.
- Lake Ihema
Lake ihema is the largest lake within akagera and a defining featureof the parks landscape. The lake is a filled with birds thus supporting a vibrant ecosystem. The lake is ideal for boat safaris where you can spot hippos, crocodiles and water birds.
The lake is surrounded by papyrus swamps which makes it a favourite spot for nature photography
- Kilala plains
The wide golden plains that are found in the northern section of the national park are reminiscent. The plains are a home of Giraffes, zebras, topis, impalas and eland Africas largest antelope.
The plains offer classic savannah scenery which is ideal for game drives and sunrise views. The perfect time to visit the plains is early morning or late afternoon for cooler temperatures and active wildlife
- Mutumba Hills
Mutumba Hills are found in wildlife rich region of akagera national park in the northern region. The hills are about 1,800 metres which is one of the highest points in Akagera national park. The hills offer amazing views of the surrounding parkland and lakes. The hills are covered in the lush grasslands and scattered trees. Thus, making it a great place for spotting roan antelope, bushbucks and baboons. The hills are great for scenic drives, birdwatching and catching a breath-taking view across the savannah.
- Lakes and wetlands
The akagera national park is blessed with more than 10 lakes connected to swamps and rivers as well. The amazing and unique wetland system is the largest protected in central Africa.
The lakes include Shakani, Gishanju and Rwanyakizinga are known for their beauty and biodiversity. Fishing is permitted at lake Shakani with prior arrangements.
- Birds
Akagera national park is a birding paradise with approximately 500 bird species. The park is a home to a variety of birds which are observed within the savannah plains, hills, forest, swamps and shores of lakes and rivers. These include shoebill, cattle egret, hammer kop, fish eagles, sacred and hadada ibis, grey-backed fiscals, fan-tailed widowbird and pied crow among others.
The best areas are lake Ihema, papyrus swamps, Mutumba hills and woodland zones. The best season for birdwatching within the national park is November to April when migratory species arrive.
