This 6-day African safari explores two of Rwanda’s most iconic national parks which is akagera national park in the east and nyungwe forest national park in the southwest. Akagera national park offers thrilling savannah wildlife encounters, boat cruise on lake Ihema and big five encounters while Nyungwe provides a contrasting rainforest experience with chimpanzee trekking, colobus monkeys and the famous canopy walk. DETAILED ITINERARY
Day 1: Arrival in Kigali and transfer to akagera national park
Upon arrival at Kigali international airport, meet your safari guide from African vacation safari who will brief you about the safari. After, you will embark on the scenic drive to akagera national park. on arrival, you will check into your lodge for a relaxation, dinner and overnight stay.
Day 2: Morning game drive and afternoon boat cruise
After an early breakfast, embark on a morning game drive through the parks northern sector. Traverse open plains, woodlands and wetlands in search of elephants, lions, rhinos, giraffes, zebras, leopards, antelopes and buffalos. After the game drive, you will return to the lodge for lunch.
In the afternoon, enjoy a relaxed boat cruise safari on lake Ihema. While on the cruise, you will spot animals like hippos, crocodiles and various bird species such as kingfishers, herons and African fish eagles among others. After the boat cruise return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 3: Morning game drive and transfer to Kigali
After morning breakfast, you will head into the park for a morning game. While in the park you may spot animals that you missed out in the earlier game drives. After the game drive return to the lodge for lunch. Later, check out of the lodge and embark on the journey to Kigali. On arrival, you will check into the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 4: Transfer to Nyungwe forest national park
After breakfast, check out of the lodge and begin your journey to the majestic Nyungwe forest national park, passing through green tea plantations and hilly landscapes. You will have a stopover at Nyanza kings palace and later proceed to nyungwe. On arrival, you will check into the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 5: Chimpanzee trekking and canopy walk
After early morning breakfast, you will be e transferred to the park headquarters for a briefing. After the briefing, you will start trekking in the forest in search of the chimpanzees which takes about 2 to 5 hours. Once the chimpanzees are located, you will spend an hour with them where you will be able to learn about their behaviours, watch them carry out their daily activities, take photos and record videos. After the trekking, return to the lodge for lunch.
In the afternoon, you will head out for a canopy walk which starts from Uwinka visitors centre and is accessed from Igishigishigi trail. The canopy walkway is 160 meters long and 70 meters high from the ground. During the canopy walk, you will enjoy stunning aerial views of the forest, treetops, different birds and primates among others. After the canopy walk, you will return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 6: Transfer back to Kigali and departure
Wake up at leisure, check out of the lodge and embark to the journey back to Kigali. On arrival, you will have a city tour where you will visit places such as the Kigali genocide memorial, kimironko market and local art craft centres among others. After the city tour, you will be dropped off at the international airport for your flight back home.
